A
docile temperament and excellent learning ability
Murgese horses
are extremely docile. They are not likely to make use of
defences as they get used to saddles and harnesses with the
greatest of ease.
They lend themselves to being used for equestrian tourism
and cross-country riding because of these qualities. Another
important characteristic, along with obedience, is the
ability to learn which makes them qualified for the
complicated exercises of the haute cole, steeple chasing and
physiotherapy. Thanks to the ease with which they can be
trained and their good character, they are used, among a
great many things, for shows using horses. (Nando Orfei used
them many times for saddle acrobatics).
High degree of
rusticity and stamina
The Murgia climate, with its particularly harsh winters
due to being exposed to the icy winds coming down from the
Carpatians and the Balkans, and extremely hot summers,
during which the whole area takes on semi-desert
characteristics, have given this breed the great roughness
that distinguishes it. It should be recalled that they are
raised on open ranges, generally without any shelter. They
also have great resistance to diseases: organic disorders
such as heaves and intestinal diseases are almost unknown
among these horses. The rugged skeletons and muscles are
accompanied by a tough and thick epidermis which plays an
important role in protection against insect bites and thorny
vegetation.
The Murgese horse is likewise a superb grazer
and makes the most of poor pastures, especially in the
mountains.
It should also be pointed out that the
Forestry Service of the State uses these horses for service
all over Italy
