The farm belongs to the Basile from the XVII century.
The Basile with their passion have always taken care of
horse breeding handing this tradition from father to son.
Thanks to the Murgese attitude to the graze, The Basiles carry
out a kind of horse breeding in a natural state.
The breeding is of type wild; thanks to the large one
enable' and attitude to the pasture of the Murgese .
From the '900 their horse breeding was oriented and to the
Murgese horse and to the production of the Donkey of Martina
Franca, an animal typical of this land born interbreeding the
Murgese horse and the Donkey stallions of Martina franca.
The Donkey of Martina Franca was particularly appreciated by the
Italian Army, who every year bought many specimen because of
their size and balance.
In 1926 the Agricultural Ministry promoted the selection of the
Murgese race and so Mr Francesco Basile, the owner of the farm
started the selection in its stud farm. The best stud mare were
entered into the Stallion Register and among all we remind
"Margherita", "Masella" and "Aquilina", the stud mare of great
value from which all the mare in the farm comes from.
After having taken his degree in Agricultural Science at the
University of Florence, Alfonso Basile, promoter in 1948 and
president until 1995 of the Breeders Association, gave a new
statement to the breeding and the selection of this important
Italian horse race. This was possible thanks to the close
collaboration with the colonel Agostino D'Alessandro, the
director of the Regio deposito Stalloni in Foggia, today
Istituto Incremento Ippico.
For almost 50 years Alfonso Basile has been the point of
reference of the whole breeding movement. Thanks to his passion
and his attitudes he was able to increase the number of horse in
the stud-farm and to promote the Murgese outside the Regional
borders. Many articles were published in the different rewiews
and many legislative interventions were made in favour of this
sector. It was a great effort but it has given excellent results
from the technical and organizational point of view.
From many years Alfonso Basile was the President of the National
Council of the Italian horse race in the A.I.A (Italian Breeders
Association) and Member of the National Executive Council. He
also was Vice-president of the Istituto Incremento Ippico in
Foggia, subserving the potentiation of the Institute and he
promoted annals for the horse production and many selected
covenig stud farms for the stallions of the Institute.
In the years San Paolo stud farm has produced about 100 Murgese
stallions.
